At first "Departure's" emphasis on nuance over explication, and its delicately beautiful aesthetics, have a seductive fascination. But after a time, the alternately spare and floridly literary dialogue begins to seem pretentious, needlessly filigreeing the characters' underlying psychology, which emerges as more pat, and familiar, than Steggall seems to realize. There's a sharp, funny moment when the blase Clement responds to one of aspiring scribe Elliot's soliloquies with "You're a bit of a cliche — 'the poet, '" but it's practically the first and last time the film acknowledges that our young protagonist is, in fact, a bit insufferable. Instead, Steggall increasingly seems to take Elliott just as seriously as he takes himself, climaxing in an overripe lyrical "catharsis" involving slow-motion underwater nudity scored to a Dvorak operatic aria. One hopes the adult Elliott might become would roll his eyes at such histrionic nonsense. Yet there's no hint that the filmmaker, let alone the character, is capable of seeing it that way.

Rather awkwardly, when Juliet meets him she, too, is drawn to him. The title resonates throughout the film: the setting is the sale, and therefore departure from, a French holiday home. Beatrice, the mother, is facing a departure from the life she has become used to and the personality that used to define her. Elliot, the 15 year old boy, is seeking a departure from his family alongside an internal departure repressing his own feelings and emotions. The tension and sense of awkwardness resonates and remains obvious from start to finish as mother and son conflict over love and desire. The music and singing are emotive and retained my attention, even when some scenes felt slightly dry and empty. To me, this is a definition of an average film. Fine, but by no means exceptional. "Departure" is another of those precious coming-of-age films that the British or the French, in particular, tend to do rather well, this one being British but set in France where Juliet Stevenson and her teenage son Alex Lawther have come to sell the family's holiday home. Young Lawther, (twenty when the film was made but looking much younger), is also discovering his sexuality and it isn't girls he appears to be interested in, so when he spies a slightly older French boy on a bridge, his hormones start working overtime.

Stevenson delivers her customary meticulous performance, though too often she's left over-emphatically channeling the frustrations that the script's mannered reserve refuses to spell out. (People too well bred to talk about their problems can grow just as tiresome as those who can't stop talking about them. ) Lawther, who played the young Alan Turing in "The Imitation Game, " provides all too vivid a portrait of the Young Would-Be Artiste as self-absorbed, hypersensitive twit, though that was probably not the intention. Brossard nimbly shoulders the ambiguities of a character who exists mostly as a catalyst. Lynch and Niamh Cusack (in just one scene as an Irish neighbor) are capable in even sketchier support roles. Though its content may eventually test the patience of many viewers, "Departure" is never less than admirably accomplished in packaging terms. From Brian Fawcett's frequently ravishing, atmospheric photography to Jools Scott's tastefully sparse score and the immaculately faux-sloppy color washes on the interior walls of the protagonists' country home, the film's surfaces are lovingly tended.
So they are going to tell that story and if only 30% of people make their second film, then you're going to have a lot more coming-of-age films. " LGBT coming-of-age dramas weren't Steggall's only point of reference. During filming, he re-watched several films and read certain books to help him rekindle the same feelings he was looking to evoke with his debut feature. Andrew Kötting's Ivul (2009), moments in Federico Fellini's La strada (1954), and Denton Welch's novel In Youth There's Pleasure were some of his reference points that he swapped and exchanged with Lawther. Steggall goes on to explain how his theatrical and operatic background influenced his approach as a film director. "It informs it in lots of positive ways and negative ways. There's a theatricality which I hoped I could get away with in this, in the sense that there's an extent to which the film is being written by Elliot, who is from time to time pretentious and imaginative and poetic.
